Major League Ultimate announced today their 2016 schedule for all teams.

The 2016 MLU season will once again feature each of the 8 MLU teams playing 10 games a season, followed by two conference championships and a Championship between the two conference champions.  This year will see a more compressed schedule, as well as professional ultimate’s first cross-divisional games. Many factors were taken into account when planning the 2016 schedule:

“Building the schedule is always a bit difficult simply because there are so many factors to take into account. This year we worked closely with the Player Advisory Committee as well as coaches and officials to build a schedule that appealed to them, while also factoring in things like seasonal weather, holidays, and club tournaments.” said David Kucherlapati, MLU VP of Operations. “We couple these things with the logistical concerns of travel, filming and planning, and at the end of the day we try to come up with a schedule that checks as many of the boxes as we can.”

The compressed schedule, featuring more double header weekends will result in the MLU Championship being held on the weekend of July 16-17, roughly three weeks earlier than it was in 2015, which saw the Boston Whitecaps win their 2nd title on August 8.  The location for the 2016 Championship game has yet to be determined, as the league examines opportunities in all of it’s markets.

The 2016 Cross-divisonal matchups will see San Francisco host New York (May 14) and Portland travel to Boston the following week (May 21). The league hopes to expand this series in future seasons.

There is a lot of excitement surrounding the cross-divisional games.  Week 6’s matchup will see the New York Rumble (2-8 in 2015) become the first MLU Eastern Conference team to play on the west coast as they travel to the Bay Area to take on the San Francisco Dogfish (3-7 in 2015).  All three previous matches between the two conferences have ended with the East being victorious (The Eastern Conference is 3-0 in MLU Championships, all in Philadelphia). The Week 7 matchup in Boston will see the two teams many expected to meet in the 2015 MLU Championship, as the Portland Stags (9-1 in 2015) travel to take on the reigning Champion Whitecaps (7-3 in 2015).

“Cross-divisional games are one of those things that we’ve been wanting to do for a while, from the beginning of the MLU, really. It’s been a bit of a pipedream for some time, and after a lot of work from our team we’ve finally been able to realize it.”  said Kucherlapati at the time of the announcement.

The league also announced that 2016 Ticket Packages will be available for purchase prior to the new year.  For ticket announcments, follow MLU on Facebook and Twitter.
