Another MLU season is upon us, thus time to begin fantasy trash talking as well as semi-informed Picks and Predictions by the MLU “Experts”. Each week, we predict the outcomes of MLU games. We’re not very good at frisbee, but we’ve got that fire for competition. Let us indulge ourselves and pretend this matters!

Eastern Conference Star of the Week: Billy Sickles (Philadelphia)
Western Conference Star of the Week: Cody Bjorklund (Portland)

“What could be better than a rematch of last year’s Eastern Conference Finals on opening weekend? Force both teams to display their depth on the back end of a double header while also having a previous game to work out some kinks. Dramatic build up out of the way: the Spinners will end Sunday 2-0. They’ll have the benefit of a home game, only a short trip back from NY, and not having to face Jeff Graham and Josh Markette. Boston will find their stride this season, but not before the Spinners jump out to a strong start for a second consecutive year.”

“I wish I had a preseason game to watch of the new look Current. There are too many question marks about how this team is going to look, on both sides of the disc, for me to comfortably call a week 1 upset of the reigning champions”

“The New York Rumble are ready for the Spinners. The Spinners are ready for Boston. The Current are ready for Boston. Boston and Portland are ready to start winning. Seattle is ready for Portland. San Francisco is ready for the rookies from Vancouver. Vancouver is ready to not be rookies any more. The team from the City of Brotherly Love has to find itself in a hole at half before it can heroically climb its way back to where it was before clambering into the hole in the first place.”

“New stadium, new coaching setup, and the most rookies in the league is not exactly a good recipe for a week 1 win against a veteran Philadelphia team. The Spinners are hungry after a disappointing finish in 2015 and are looking to get a win early, and a fresh New York team with a lot of unknowns is the way to get it. The Rumble should grow over the course of the season, but will probably being playing catch-up for most of the evening against the Spinners. Philadelphia may have lost some key players from last year’s team, but they kept the core mostly in tact including Matt Glazer, who shredded the Rumble with 6 goals back in week 3 last season.”

“The Rainmakers are going to have their hands full facing Portland this weekend. With 11 MLU rookies gathered from several different teams, chemistry and cohesion should be in short supply in the first week of the season. The same cannot be said for the Stags. The 2016 version is practically identical to the group that lost one game in last year’s regular season. The returns of Chris Hancock from injury and Jeremy Norden from a one year absence from the MLU should solidify the handler core of an offense that was already dynamic and efficient. Last year’s D was stifling and there’s no reason to expect much dropoff. While Seattle still has plenty of offensive firepower with Khalif El-Salaam, Danny Trytiak and 36 year-young rookie Ben Wiggins (goalty throws!!!), Portland’s team continuity will be too much for Seattle to overcome. And let’s not forget that Seattle stunned Portland in last year’s Western Conference playoffs, putting the promise of revenge into the mix. I think it will be close, but the veteran Stags should take down the as of yet unproven Rainmakers.”
