The 2016 MLU Season has begun, thus time to begin fantasy trash talking as well as semi-informed Picks and Predictions by the MLU “Experts”. Each week, we predict the outcomes of MLU games. We’re not very good at frisbee, but we’ve got that fire for competition. Let us indulge ourselves and pretend this matters!

Prediction record: 5-0

Boston Whitecaps vs. New York Rumble | Saturday, April 16, 2016, 4:00 p.m. ET Score: 18-14, Boston

Philadelphia Spinners vs. Washington D.C. Current | Saturday, April 16, 2016, 7:00 p.m. ET Score: 22-20, Philadelphia

Portland Stags vs. Vancouver Nighthawks | Saturday, April 16, 2016, 6:00 p.m. PT Score: 23-16, Portland

Portland Stags vs. Seattle Rainmakers | Sunday, April 17, 2016, 1:00 p.m. PT Score: 21-19, Portland

Eastern Conference Star of the Week: Lloyd Blake (Washington DC)
Western Conference Star of the Week: Raphael Hayes (Portland)

“Last weeks results will skew this matchup in a lot of peoples’ minds but don’t be surprised when DC makes this a game. Playing in tough conditions last week, the Current weren’t able to close out the win, but with another week’s practice under their belt they should be ready to give the Spinners a game. Names like Lindsey, Brandolph, and Reydams on the injury report make the game that much closer, however in the end the Spinners crew has had enough time to cement it’s core that it should pull out another win. ”

Western Conference Star of the Week: Timmy Perston (Portland)

“I don’t even want to think about what final score of this game is going to look like. An angry Boston side coming off a tough loss on the road last weekend, against the Rumble… While there were moments of brilliance in New York’s play last week, it was sandwiched between long periods of mediocrity. Boston wins big, like, real big.”

Western Conference Star of the Week: Timmy Perston (Portland)

“Angry Boston is scary.  The Whitecaps are NOT going to want to fall below .500 and they are definitely not going to want to give up a game they should win.  New York showed definite flashes that make me think that the strategy of developing raw talent may work down the road.  This weekend though, Boston wins by a lot.”

“The Nighthawks aren’t ready for the Stags at this point in the season unless they play a particularly clean affair on offense.  I don’t think they will, based on last weekend.  Yes, this would be an opportunity for me to be ‘loud wrong.’”

“I didn’t see anything last week to suggest that the Rumble could make the necessary changes to be competitive against the Whitecaps this week. If New York can keep their turnovers to a minimum they can keep the game close, but Boston’s defense is going to be hard overcome.”

“The one thing Portland didn’t have to do in their near perfect regular season in 2015, was play on back to back days. That’s what they face this weekend with both contests on the road. As we saw with Boston last weekend, travelling for both games on Saturday and Sunday isn’t easy, and I think Seattle will be ready. With Cam Bailey in the fold this week, the Rainmakers should be able to match up better defensively with the Stags. Seattle will look to correct some of the simple mistakes they made against Portland in week one such as running to and attacking the disc for a catch. With an up and coming team like the Dogfish threatening for a playoff spot this year, this games becomes some what of a must win so the Rainmakers don’t start 0-2.”

“The Stags will hang on in Seattle and start 3-0 to take command of the Western Conference, just as they did a season ago. Seattle neutralized Timmy Perston a week ago, but the Stags proved to be too deep to focus on neutralizing one star. Perston will find the endzone a lot this weekend.”

“Last week against the Rainmakers, the Stags were broken only twice and committed a paltry 12 turnovers en route to a convincing 22-16 win. In Berkeley (under admittedly terrible weather conditions) the Nighthawks notched 39 turnovers and were broken 12 times in a convincing 21-12 loss to the Dogfish. While I am sure that the young and unproven Vancouver squad will improve over the course of the season, that improvement can’t come quickly enough to fend off Portland. Stags charge to a lopsided victory in BC.”
