MEDFORD, MA – Here’s a quick look at the Whitecaps’ 26-13 victory over the Philadelphia Spinners at Hormel Stadium.
How it Happened: The Whitecaps took an opening two-point lead, but the Spinners caught up quickly and were able to tie the game up at five. They scored again as the horn blew to mark the end of the first quarter and had a single-point lead heading into the second. The Whitecaps scored five points in a row at the beginning of the second – thanks largely in part to an incredible defensive and offensive effort by Jack Hatchett – and they never looked back. While the Spinners were able to turn the quarter around and reopen their scoring, they ended the first half down by four points (12-8). The third and fourth quarters saw a Whitecaps defense that was both ferocious and efficient, and the Whitecaps were eventually able to widen their lead to 13 points by the end of the game.
Stat of the game: 9. The Whitecaps scored nine uncontested points in a row from halfway through the third quarter to halfway through the fourth.
Quotable: “We played well today,” said Whitecaps offensive cutter Jeff Graham. “It’s important that we continue that level of play into the playoffs.”
What’s next: The Whitecaps earned home field advantage for the Eastern Conference Finals and end the season with sole possession of first place in the Eastern Conference with a record of 7-3. The Spinners end the season at 6-4 and will face the Whitecaps again in Hormel Stadium on July 18 for the right to advance to the 2015 MLU Championship.
