Major League Ultimate announced today the date and location of the 2016 MLU Championship Game, with the game to be played on Saturday, July 16 at Villanova Stadium in Bryn Mawr, Pa.
“We are very excited to be working with Villanova Stadium for this year’s championship game,” said Nic Darling, MLU Executive Vice President, “Villanova University has a history of excellence that will certainly benefit our event and so far the experience working with the stadium staff has been incredible. This is going to be our best game yet.”
The game will take place between the Eastern Conference and Western Conference champions, which will be decided during the conference championship games on the weekend of June 25. The teams will meet at Villanova to compete for the 2016 MLU Championship Trophy.
Villanova Stadium, site of Goodreau Field & Jumbo Elliott Track, has a seating capacity of 12,500 and serves as home to Villanova University’s Wildcat football, lacrosse, field hockey and track and field programs.
Originally build in the 1920s, Villanova Stadium underwent major renovations in 1999 through the University’s Stadium Renovation Project, adding a state-of-the-art press box and updated facilities. The renovations have continued over the years, with a new artificial turf playing surface and a new scoreboard installed in 2009.
Tickets packages are now on sale at MLUChampionship.com, with early bird specials offering an exclusive Game Day experiences available for a limited time. General admission, student, and youth tickets can be purchased online or by calling. Group rates are also available.
First pull will take place at 5:00 p.m.
A kids clinic with MLU players will take place Saturday before the game at 3pm. This is an amazing opportunity for children 8-18 to learn from the pros on the same field where the 2016 Championship will be decided. Tickets for the clinic are available as a package which includes admission to the Championship. The clinic will begin at 3:00 p.m., two hours before first pull.
This marks the first year that the game will be hosted at Villanova, having previously been play at University of Pennsylvania’s Franklin Field (2013) and PPL Park (2014 and 2015).
“We had an excellent experience at both Franklin Field and PPL Park, but given the fact that we have fans across a broad area of the Greater Philadelphia region, we felt it was time for another change of venue,” said Darling, “Villanova is incredibly convenient to many of the area’s ultimate fans and the stadium itself has all the right features to accommodate our Championship and make it a success.”
In addition to the Wildcat athletic programs, Villanova Stadium has in past years been home to the Philadelphia Charge of the Women’s United Soccer Association as well as Major League Lacrosse’s Philadelphia Barrage.
